The MTN Group in April this year reached 100 million subscribers, a milestone in its course to become the world’s leading telecommunications service provider in emerging markets. This means that with a telecommunications network that covers a population of about 500 million, in the 21 markets where the Group operates in Africa and the Middle East, 1 in 5 is an MTN subscriber. The Group had signed up 98,203,000 subscribers by March 31, 2009 – up 8% from December 31, 2008 – and reached the 100 million mark in April. MTN’s success is founded on a business model that includes sound financial investment, strong corporate governance, effective management and social responsibility. The result was also made possible with the contribution and effort of MTN’s 28,000-strong staff across its 21 operations. “For a 15-year-old company operating amid increased competitive intensity in all our markets, this is a most satisfactory performance by MTN,” said Mr Phuthuma Nhleko Group President and CEO. “This affirms our leadership position in many areas of our business.”
