The MTN Group pledges US$10 million and opens SMS donation line. MTN Cyprus is actively involved in this huge initiative

The MTN Group invites its 219 million customers to a joint campaign that started on December 1st, over a period of three months, to raise funds in the framework of the international initiative of the African Union “Africa Against Ebola”.

The MTN Group has played a fundamental role in the efforts to stop the spread of the Ebola epidemic in countries where the company is active. US$10 million have been set aside by the Group for this purpose and an invitation has been extended to its customers around the world to participate in the campaign by donating at least 1 dollar each, through SMS.

MTN Cyprus subscribers can take part in the fight against Ebola by donating at least one euro each by sending the SMS "StopEbola" to the number 6655. All the donations will be added to support the international initiative of the African Union, ‘Africa Against Ebola’.

Apart from the donations gathered and the US$10 million set aside by the Group itself, it actively participates in the battle against the Ebola epidemic in many different ways: the Group offers direct help to medical units that work on saving the lives of those infected, at a preventive level with information campaigns and initiatives for the prevention of future epidemics, or by training people on how to spot the symptoms of the virus.

"Our Group supports the campaign and promotes the concerted efforts aimed at battling the spread of the Ebola epidemic and the saving of lives. In the MTN Group, we believe that the only way to reverse the destructive path of the epidemic is to face the spread of the virus together and ease the suffering inflicted on families and communities today,” states Sifiso Dabengwa, President and CEO of the MTN Group.

Mr. Giannis Giannakis, Volunteer and NGO Commissioner stated: "We support efforts that contribute to the support and protection of citizens, particularly regarding health issues. The Ebola virus is a global threat to health. For this reason I congratulate MTN for its initiative to support the global fight to combat this serious epidemic. It is everyone’s duty to create synergies and help for a better society, supporting actions which aim to fight epidemics that threaten humanity”.

In affected countries, like Guinea and Liberia, the MTN Group is in close collaboration with the authorities in order to contain the spread of the virus and has undertaken a series of initiatives to help the communities. These measures include information campaigns about the illness and its transmission, as well as preventive measures any one of us can take.
